Drama is a performing art that incorporates elements of literature and music. In drama class, students can learn about the background and features of particular eras. As students rehearse their roles in a play, they cultivate self-expression skills too. During this process, they build positive character qualities.
As a vital part of Pao School's character education, drama is highly beneficial for students:
Learning drama can improve the language ability of non-native speakers
Learning drama can cultivate students’ creativity
Learning drama can develop students’ adaptive ability
Learning drama can improve students' understanding of the world
Learning drama can improvethe language abilityof non-native speakers
It is challenging for many people to learn a foreign language, especially if they don't get a chance to use the language regularly. It is almost impossible to improve without regular practice. Without a certain level of proficiency in a foreign language, it is difficult to perform a role in a play using that language.
Drama education is a strategy based on language learning. Hegel once said: ‘The comprehensive and applicable form of drama is dialogue'. Drama turns a classroom into a theatre, making academic work more stimulating. In an immersive English drama environment, students continuously practice vocabulary and pronunciation to improve their English proficiency.
One student in Pao School's Drama Club commented on how studying drama has been beneficial for him:
Drama class makes me feel great. It helps me to get along even better with my classmates and teachers. It makes me a more considerate person.
Learning dramatic performancehelps to improve students' ability toadapt to new surroundings
From the onset of a drama course at Pao School, students realize that the course is different from others. Teachers focus on helping students think back to their childhood years and channel how they learned as young children - through unrestricted performance - into their study of drama. In this manner, students can see drama as something natural rather than forced. While some students may feel squeamish about this process, teachers will ensure that everyone acclimates to the unique classroom environment by playing fun games that everyone knows well.
Learning drama cancultivate students’ creativity
Drama inspires imagination and creativity. During rehearsals, students instinctively use exaggerated expressions, body movements and pronunciation to portray characters. This helps them to better express themselves.Practicing drama also strengthens teamwork skills. Students coordinate with each other to ensure an optimal performance.
Learning drama can improvestudents’ understanding of the world
Drama is a performing art that incorporates elements of literature and music. In drama class, students can learn about the background and features of particular historical eras. As students rehearse their roles in a play, they also cultivate self-expression skills. During this process, they build positive character qualities.
During rehearsals, students play many different roles requiring distinctive performances. They must figure out how to best represent the characters in the play. In this endeavor, they must judge their own performances. Meanwhile, every person has his or her own story. Drama offers a beneficial way to help students to see the world through others’ eyes by participating in their stories.
The World Exploration Residential Summer Camp will use a stratified teaching mode that places students in courses based on language ability. This camp advocates experiential learning to improve ability in English. Over an 11-day period that will include various activities, students will broaden their horizons.
Teachers from YK Pao School will lead an undergraduate volunteer team to supervise the student’s lodging located in star hotel nearby campus.
Two students will share a room.
The hotel offers 24-hour security guards posted on each floor to ensure students' safety.
Students will have breakfast in the hotel restaurant, where they will enjoy delicious food (both Chinese and Western) cooked by an experienced chef.
The hotel is just a 10-minute drive from YK Pao School's Songjiang campus. Every day, students (under the supervision of teachers) will travel between the hotel and campus on a shuttle bus.
Ms. Ada has been very well received among students in previous years' summer activities. This year, she will continue to lead the teacher team, ensuring that the classroom experience and boarding life for students are both outstanding.
